Belmont Shore Residents Association MINUTES BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING July 8, 2010 The meeting was called to order by President Aileen Colon at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Julie Dean, John Forstrom, Marvin Jones, Jim Lazarus, Secretary Jeff Miller and Christopher Van Horn. Executive Board members Elizabeth Borsting, Vice President Terence Endersen, Adam Hattan, and Treasurer Robert O'Connor were absent. Twenty-five additional BSRA members and visitors were present. Librarian Debi Gurley announced the summer reading programs for adults and children at the Bayshore Library. The meeting agenda and the minutes of the June 10 meeting were approved. BSBA Executive Director, DeDe Rossi announced several Second Street promotional events. Garry Negroni and Fabius Rizk from Panama Joe's spoke briefly, promoting their restaurant and summer menu. One complaint was heard: patrons congregating on the patio and on the sidewalk make it difficult, and at times impossible, for pedestrians to pass on the sidewalk and to avoid the smokers there. Julie Maleki from Third District Councilman Gary Delong's office explained the work in Naples repaving of portions of Second Street. President Aileen Colon spoke about the need for better communication from the city when issues affect our neighborhood, such as the ongoing Second Street repaving work and street closures for BSBA events. She also reported the issues discussed at the recent Third District Neighborhood meeting, which included a presentation by the new Long Beach Fire Chief Alan Patalano. Colon also reported the proceedings of the Parking Commission meeting. She noted there is a new City Staff person for the Parking Commission. Travis Brooks is retiring; he will be replaced by Jim Fisk, whose email address is james.fisk@longbeach.gov. Third District Councilman Gary Delong spoke about several current city issues, and responded to issues raised by audience and board members. In response to a request for his assistance with appointing Terence Endersen to the Parking Commission, he replied, "I'll do my best". Newly appointed LBPD Chief Jim McDonnell spoke about law enforcement issues in the city and his plans for increased use of technology. He introduced the new East Division Commander, Lisa Lopez. They responded to several questions and comments from the audience and board members. Secretary Jeff Miller reported the checking account balance is $3,996.01. There was an expense of $140 for the annual rent of the P.O. Box. These expenditures were approved by unanimous votes: Reimbursement to Terence Endersen for purchase of videotapes, $38.31; annual fee for web site hosting, $119.40; and annual fee for liability insurance, up to $1,800. Miller announced the schedule for the upcoming annual meeting on September 9 which will include the election of the Executive Board and a vote to update our corporation records to comply with state ordinances. Nominations are open and will be presented at the August meeting. Candidates are encouraged to speak at the August meeting. A motion was approved unanimously to mail notices to members of the annual meeting and authorizing other expenses for the election, not to exceed $500. Melinda Cotton spoke about the proposed city ordinance to prohibit smoking in small parks in the city, and requested support from the BSRA. A motion to send a letter to the city endorsing the proposal was approved by a unanimous vote. Barret Randel from Barry's Beach Shack announced the sale of the restaurant and introduced the new owner, Rik Mitchell, who provided his phone numbers: 714.871.1290 and 714.488.4397 (cell).
